As anyone who has worked on a help desk or dealt with clients in
a professional capacity will tell you clients are generally stupid
and your faith in human intelligence dies a little bit every day
when you deal with them. It's not all bad, occasionally you
will get a good client who is willing to admit their stupidity and
have a clear goal in mind when they contact you. These are
the kind of clients that you want, they don't tell you how to do
your job they let you examine the requirements that they have and
then you can work with them to get the best outcome. Most
clients are not like this however and in Information Technology
that is generally due to clients thinking they know what they want
and how they want it done.
The problem with this is that professionals do this every day,
they deal with clients like you every day and know a lot more about
this than you do. So while you may have seen something that
looks cool it may not be the ideal solution for what you are trying
to accomplish.
Instead to get the best out of a professional or company tell
them why you want to do something. What is it you hope to
accomplish by doing this? Then let the professional help you
decide what you need to do to meet your goals and how this can best
be accomplished given your resources.
As a Christian who has been involved with churches for a while I
don't think this is something that we have learnt. In general
from the perspective of a professional all pastors tend to hear is
either an amused snicker or a tired sigh because from our
perspective we know where this goes. We deal with clients
like this every day and it normally doesn't end well, so admit your
ignorance and ask a professional what you should be doing and how
you should be doing it. No you will probably not like what
they say, but if they attend your church they love it just as much
as you do and are only telling you what they think you need to
hear.
So work with them, after all:
So don't bother correcting mockers; they will
only hate you. But correct the wise, and they will love you.
Instruct the wise, and they will be even wiser. Teach
the righteous, and they will learn even more. Proverbs 9: 8-9
(NLT).
We are supposed to love correction.
